PhD Positions in Pattern recognition and Machine Learning

We have two openings for 2 PhD students in machine learning and pattern recognition with graphs. The positions deal with neural networks for learning graph embedding and graph matching. The research will be performed in the pattern recognition group (PRG) of the University of Bern, Switzerland (https://prg.inf.unibe.ch). The start of the PhD is February 1, 2024 (can be adjusted).

Tasks

The overall objective of the project is to develop and research robust methods which combine the best ideas and methods that emerged from the three eras of research of graph-based pattern recognition (graph matching, graph embedding, graph neural networks). Through this combination, we expect to create new types of algorithms and introduce novel graph-based methods that go substantially beyond the current state of the art and significantly surpass it in terms of both speed and accuracy.

We envisage two major lines of research that will be processed by two PhD students.

  • The first PhD student aims at bridging the gap between graph neural networks and graph embedding
  • The second PhD student aims at bridging the gap between graph neural networks and graph matching

Requirements

We are looking for highly motivated applicants who are interested in becoming involved in cutting-edge research. You have a Master of Science in Computer Science with a solid background in machine learning and pattern recognition. You have excellent skills in applied mathematics and a programming language (e.g., Python or Java). You have a solid background in Deep Learning and are already proficient in one of the major Deep Learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch). We expect fluent communication skills in English.

We offer

You will be part of a team of academic researchers working on cutting-edge pattern recognition technologies. You will have the opportunity to contribute to and participate in the international research community. You will receive a very competitive salary and financial support to attend training courses and international conferences.

Application

Apply via email to kaspar.riesen@unibe.ch. We expect a single pdf with the following three contents:

  • letter of motivation (answer in particular the question why you want to do research and what motivates you about the task of working with graphs)
  • curriculum vitae
  • Master’s diploma and grade record of all MSc courses taken
